The Longines Speed Challenge in Paris : a win for Doda

The speed experts had a field day on December 5th in the Longines Speed Challenge in Paris. Alvaro “Doda” de Miranda, jumping for Brazil, took all the risks with AD Nouvelle Europe Z, and despite the attempts of the other riders –including Christian Ahlamnn- none of them managed to beat him.

AHO Breeders’ European Championships in Chantilly

Famous Swedish rider Rolf-Goran Bengtsson riding Casall ASK took the Grand Prix win in the nineth leg of the Longines Global Champions which took place in Chantilly (France) on July 27th. Another hugely popular Swede, Henrik von Eckermann, riding Cantinero, came in second while Canadian star Eric Lamaze with his relatively new ride Fine Lady V was third.

Belgian rider Pieter Devos was the winner of the inaugural Longines Global Champions Tour of Shanghai Grand Prix. Silver medal position went to Edwina Tops-Alexander (Australia) and Bronze to Michel Hecart (France). On Sunday, French rider Kevin Staut and two Qatari riders took the honours in the Hua Tai-Pinebridge Shangai Cup, with a fantastic jump-off.

A surprise win for the young American rider Lucy Davis at the tenth leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour held at Lausanne in Switzerland. Lucy, the youngest competitor, beat Patrice Delaveau and Kevin Staut into second and third place respectively. Roger-Yves Bost (“Bosty) won the big CSI5* class (1.50m with jump off).

The official calendar of the Global Champions Tour 2013 has just been revealed. The starting gun for the Championship race will be fired in Madrid (this town hosts the GCT for the first time) where the opening event of the season takes place from May 2-5. 
London and Shanghaï are also among the new destinations, and the the last leg will take place in Doha (Qatar) the prestigious Al Shaqab Equestrian Centre in Doha.

Dressage rider Ulrike Prunthaller convicted for cruel training methods

Austrian FEI rider Ulrike Prunthaller has recently been convicted to a nine month suspension from competition riding and a 4,000 euro fine for the use of painful training methods to her horses – including the use of electric shocks.
Her coach was fined 5,000 euro for knowingly supporting these methods.

Horsegate – clandestine travels of horse meat throughout Europe?

New revelations have come to light concerning the origins of horse meat used illegally: an article published in Romanian in 2011 revealed the existence of a clandestine traffic of meat from horses infected with equine infectious anemia. Cheap meat apparently exported to Italy and to France!

Mid-January the bombshell struck. British supermarkets have been surreptitiously flooded with “horse burgers” before being rapidly withdrawn. The scandal continued when one of the American fast food chains reported the presence of equine DNA in meat coming from an Irish supplier. The controversy grows and reports oscillate between true and false.
